About me

Rachael Lallensack is a freelance reporter covering scientific research, funding and policy. She recently completed a 6-month internship at Nature magazine at the publication's Washington, D.C. bureau. Previously, she spent six months as an intern at Science magazine  where she wrote about cutting edge research for the ScienceShots blog and covered science policy for ScienceInsider. Her work was recognized with an honorable mention D.C. Science Writers Association Newsbrief Award.

She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2016 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Journalism & Mass Communication and Environmental Studies. She began contributing to the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism's Failure at the Faucet in 2014 during her first year in the journalism program. The series has consistently received high honors from the Milwaukee Press Club and won a Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists in 2017.

She spent a year as managing editor of The Badger Herald, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, student-run independent newspaper, after previously serving as news editor the year before. Her time in these positions piqued her interest in social justice, politics, academic research and environmental policy. She received a second place prize in the Freedom of Information category from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association for her coverage of hazing in a UW-Madison fraternity in 2015. Under her lead in senior editorial management and on the board of directors in 2016, the student newspaper won 12 awards from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association including the top honor for General Excellence.

Lallensack was a National Association of Science Writers travel fellow and attended the American Associations for the Advancement of Science conference in February 2016. She worked as a staff writer for the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies biannual magazine In Common. She has also held internship positions at The Sheboygan Press, a USA TODAY Gannett daily newspaper, and Isthmus, an alt-weekly newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin.
